Monopoly

When was the last time you played Monopoly?
You know, "One of the best-selling commercial board games in the world.... Players compete to acquire wealth through stylized economic activity involving the purchase, rental and trading of real estate using play money, as players take turns moving around the board according to the roll of the dice." Yada Yada...You know the drill.

Well, before yesterday... I think it was about 3 or 4 years ago (Maybe more) for me. It was one of my favorites to play when I was young, and also one of the worst games to play if you had a bad temper (I don't think I had one that bad, but did lose it on occasions). I was pretty good at it too (At least that's what I thought when I was younger).

A few other favorites when I was young were Scrabble, Trouble, Shoots Shute's and Latter's, Candy Land, Trivia Pursuit, Sorry! just to name a few.... in case you were wondering.

So yesterday my wife and I thought we'd try something different for a change so we give Monopoly a try. Now I thought I could just jump back into the groove of things and start kicking ass and taking names like the olden day's... boy was I mistaken. I think the game lasted about...maybe less then an hour before I went broke.

My strategy was to buy as much as I could before she got a chance to, so I did just that... (You know you only get a total of $1,500 starting off right?)... I bought everything I landed on the first two times I went around the board. Everything, even the crap one's. Her strategy was to just buy the one's that I didn't have the other half of the "Monopoly" on already. And to pace herself, Ha! I was like... "Yeah baby, lettin’ me get the Monopoly on these aren't gonna do you any good." (In my head, but let her play her way. She was gonna lose big time) But luck wasn't on my side to land on the other properties that would give me the Monopoly. Oh no, luck was not on my side.

Fast-forward about 9 or 10 times around the block... She somehow got all of the Railroads and 3 Monopolies, to my one...! (Mine was Park Place and Boardwalk though) I landed in jail about 5 times (Without collecting $200 for passing go, mind you), landed on her Monopoly of Railroad's like...5 times and couldn't pay my mortgage on the other 5 properties I owned and had to get a second mortgage on most of them to pay the bill's.

In a little less than an hour she had houses on 3 of her Monopolies, and I mortgaged off everything I owned to pay her off!@ I mean, I couldn't get a break the entire game! She totally rocked my boat! She ruled! I kissed her feet afterwards. It was... ...it wasn't a pretty picture, that's all I could tell you. So much, that I let the old school Monopoly anger start to seep out a bit (But I think I controlled it pretty well. I was very proud of myself).

It was very degrading though to say the least, not my best moments in board gamage. But I did challenge her two out of three... and plan to deliver my best Monopoly Playing ever, on our next two outings! She'll see, I'm the best. She just got lucky.

As for all of you out there in computer land... I challenge you all to a game of any of the above-mentioned games.... any time... anywhere! Go ahead, make my millenium!

  • I enjoy Life, Sorry and I collect Monopolys. I have the millenium, the old school, even the monopoly calculator! I love it. I also have old and new Life.

Do you enjoy games without boards, such as Phase 10 or plain old poker? I'd kick your butt in both. No video controller required.

  • Did you say Poker? I think not my padawan learner; I am a bit of a poker fanatic (If you will). You play me in poker, and you will be...be humbled. (Unless your one of those lucky mothers. Is it the slap happy upside down video game controller pushin' kink of luck you have).

I would give you a good run in Phase 10 too. I would be happy to add these games you mentioned to my list of challenges. You're on!

  • You're not one of those guys I have to LET win because they get all bent out of shape when they lose and don't give me sex that night *cough* Matt *cough* are you? Because I feel for your wife if she didn't receive last night. Its a sad place to be. Ok, I'm not that great at playing poker. Not because I don't know the game, but I do believe in said luck...as if magically that King is going to come on the last draw and I'll have a straight that kicks everyone's butt. Then I'm dealed a three.

  • You are one of those 'luck be a lady' players. You should get to the nearest Casino and rub some off there.

And no, I'm not that kind of *cough* guy. If she win's, I am happy for her. Good for her. Laddy Frickin Da for her. I still love her afterwards.

  • Sizzle - No, I don't mind losing if I lose the two out of three. Oh and Hungry " Hippo was great too.

    Melissa - I meant Chutes and Latter’s...
My brother and I loved Battle Ship. We were always jealous when the newer 'Electronic' Battle Ship came out... cause we never got that one. "The Battle Ship you have is the same thing! Just make toughs sounds yourself."
"Ok, mom. eeeeuuuuuuooooowwwww...boooom! You've sunk my BaTtLe ShIp!"

  • Sizzle - Ok! I don't like to lose, but I can eventually take it like a man.

  • Yes, it takes time for me to take it. I'm actually not that bad, I think it's game like Monopoly that get's my moter running.

  • There are only two games i won't play with Ray, Risk and Monopoly. Risk because I'm just not smart enough and get confused and hold up the game. Monopoly because it was the only time in my life Rya has ever danced around the livingroom screaming, "Take that b*tch. In your face, in your face!"

  • That is very funny! I would only say that after beating a team (The computer) on ESPN when they tried cheating towards the end, but I finnally pull out the win.

  • Sis - Well, lets first say that you did beat me one time a while back (And I still think it was one of those lucky players things. Ha!) And the last time we played with mom, we didn't get to finish playing. But I do know I was down but started coming back. I think you were ahead when we quit and I think I was in second or third to Rose. But losing for me, a game has to play out until the very end. hhhhhhh

I will definitely have Rose over for the next game of Monopoly. I didn't know she liked it that much.

As for you and me in Poker, I will see you in the ring soon enough. No hold's bared! We will have to settle that later though. I know it's not all luck for you though. You are definitely a very good player. I'm just better, that's all...hehehe.

And yes my wife beat me once in poker. But between me and you, it was beginners luck. She will learn to get better though when I'm done learning her more. If she ever wants to play again.

  • I beat you fair and square buddy, no beginner's luck! You're just still sad that I beat you at Monopoly the other night.

  • Oh, honey. You are always the winner in my heart.
